Air blues put DGCA in new orbit

Boom in air traffic and various challenges –– congestion and scarcity of talent –– accompanying it have launched the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) into a new orbit. Gone are the days when airlines and airports were allowed to operate on their own momentum; lack of infrastructure has made proactive regulation essential and the aviation regulator is responding to the situation.

On commercial aspects like tariffs, the government continues to follow a hands-off policy, leaving air fares and airport charges to the influence of market forces. However, when it comes to safety, reduction of congestion and consumer protection, the current feeling is that regulation is necessary to guide the industry smoothly through the ongoing boom.
