Foreign pilots sent home for ‘poor English’

The government has sent home over 20 foreign pilots flying for Indian airline companies in the past year as their poor English posed safety concerns, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Kanu Gohain said on Thursday.

“There have been cases where pilots have been sent back as their English proficiency was not up to the mark,” Mr Gohain told reporters here. The double-digit growth in the Indian civil aviation sector has resulted in acute shortage of pilots, forcing airline firms to hire foreign pilots from countries in Central Asia and eastern Europe.
