Travellers to fund unprofitable flights off airline schedules

Airline companies may no longer be forced to fly on uneconomic routes as the government plans to progressively do away with the route dispersal guidelines (RDG), that stipulate a minimum number of flights to be deployed on such routes.

A long-pending demand of the aviation industry, RDGs shall be replaced with the creation of a separate fund to subsidise uneconomic routes. The fund, termed the Essential Air Services Fund (EASF), will be created by levying a cess on both domestic and international passengers.
