Govt to get 40 Sukhois for $1.6 billion

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will soon acquire 40 Russian Sukhoi-30 fighters to bridge “inevitable gaps” in its ageing fleet, Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi confirmed in Bangalore on Thursday.

Already in the process of acquiring 126 multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA), the IAF is also purchasing, through its “fast track purchase” route, 80 medium-lift multi-role Mi-17 1V helicopters, 80 Cheetah helicopters, Israeli Phalcon AWACS and a dozen other choppers for VIP use.

The Russian Sukhois, estimated to cost $ 40 million a fighter, were expected to be in IAF service “within the next three years”, Tyagi said.
