Pvt sector wants more defence deals

The parliamentary standing committee on defence, and captains of industry were unanimous that the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) should be eased out in phases from the development of prototypes and projects, and replaced by the private sector.

In their maiden interaction with the committee on January 9, industry leaders made a strong case for 20% procurement of prototypes by users such as the army, navy and air force directly from industry. CII, Ficci and Assocham said procurement orders should be funded by up to 80% by DRDO, 15% by the armed forces and 5% by vendors.
