Steel-reinforced runways get ministry’s approval

Aircraft may now take-off and land on steel-reinforced runways. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is weighing the option of constructing steel-reinforced runways at international and domestic airports.

Civil aviation ministry has given its in-principle approval to the proposal of building runways with ‘continuous reinforced concrete pavements’ (CRCP), which can help runways handle more capacity. The proposal is mooted by the steel ministry, which argues that the use of special steel to strengthen runways would help in better utilisation besides, boosting consumption of steel.
