The Central Passport Organisation is working towards the introduction of biometric passports, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said here on Friday.
Delivering the keynote address on the concluding day of the All-India Passport Officers Conference, he said the passports would have a micro-processor based digital storage device embedded in them.
“Biometric passports will be much safer against forgery, and will also prevent the holding of more than one passport by the same individual in different names. We hope to convert all diplomatic and official passports into biometric passports in 2007 as a pilot project. Based on the experience so gained, all the ordinary passports will also be converted into biometric passports in the coming years.”
