India-Russia Defence Relationship Under Stress

The recent attack on BrahMos Aerospace, an Indo-Russian cruise missile joint venture by Russian defence firms signals a major shift in Moscow’s defence cooperation policy with New Delhi that could impact projects like the joint development of a multi-role transport aircraft, sources here said.

Unhappy with the aggressive marketing techniques of BrahMos Aerospace, which hopes to export at least 1,000 cruise missiles to friendly countries across the world, official Russian news agency Itar-Tass had in a report, believed to be sponsored by arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport, accused the joint venture of “discrediting and squeezing” Russian anti-ship missiles out of the global market.
