No military alliance with Japan, but nothing is off the table, says Narayanan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived in Tokyo this evening to begin his four-day tour to the Land of the Rising Sun.

India faces a tough diplomatic challenge as the Prime Minister begins his talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe tomorrow morning.

Japan is known for its strong views on non-proliferation and is also a key member of the 45 nation Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

Speaking to mediapersons onboard the Prime Minister’s flight, National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan said that Japan was aware of India’s needs in acquiring civilian nuclear power, but whether it will openly support the deal at the NSG is doubtful. Clearly India is seeking tacit support f not overt acceptance of the nuclear deal.
