No flights to Bengal, Kerala today

The distance between Communist-ruled states and the rest of India will increase on Thursday with almost all domestic airlines announcing suspension of services to destinations in West Bengal and Kerala. Indian, Jet Airways, Sahara , Kingfisher, IndiGo and Air Deccan have announced that their aircraft won’t fly to these states because of the general strike called by Left unions.

Train services and other modes of transport are certain to be badly hit in these two states where the ‘country-wide’ strike to protest against the Centre’s economic policy would have a real impact. The Left unions have been resorting to chest thumping to make up for the Left leaders ‘supping with the enemy’ — the reform-friendly Congress.

The strike, the Left leaders must be expecting, would help it burnish its credentials that were damaged following the Singur controversy. Left’s fellow travellers, who have been standing with them on the same side of the barricade, have been the most vocal critics of the Singur deal.
