Congestion surcharge by airlines?

The congestion surcharge being charged by a clutch of Indian airlines, including ours, is something we have been forced into. This cess has been necessitated by the additional costs that airlines have been incurring due to the extra flying we do on account of air traffic controller (ATC) delays.

On an average, we at Jet Airways incur costs to the tune of $6 million every quarter due to congestion in the air. This translates into Rs 150 per ticket in each sector. The congestion delays in the air not only leads to extra fuel being burnt by aircraft but also the loss of usage time available on each aircraft, in course of the day. That apart, airlines are inconvenienced because of the extra fuel they have to carry to meet the requirement of those additional flying minutes.
