GMR Infrastructure Ltd. said on Monday it had awarded a 54-billion-rupee contract to Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T) to design and construct the terminal, runway and associated works at the New Delhi airport.

Delhi International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (DIAL), a joint venture between GMR, German airport operator Fraport and Airports Authority of India, won rights in February to develop New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi international airport.

DIAL plans to invest 72 billion rupees by 2010 for the airport development, which would involve constructing a new terminal, a third runway and modernisation of the complex.

This would enable the airport to double passenger handling capacity to 37 million passengers per annum.
