U.S. for Closer Military, Defense Ties with India: Burns

The United States wants closer military ties with India besides cooperation in civil nuclear technology, US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns told a press conference after talks with Defence Ministry officials here in New Delhi on Friday.

Burns said the US had a “separate ambition” of a much closer military relationship with India and that it hoped to participate in the transformation of its armed forces. “We want to build a much closer military relationship with India,” he said.

“There will soon be the transfer of US naval vessels to the Indian Navy. We are very hopeful that the US can participate in the transformation of the Indian armed forces,” he added.

He said that technology transfers would allow the two militaries to have a “long-term relationship. So, we see India as a partner.” About the final bill on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the US official said it was a “big breakthrough” and that the “hardest hurdles” were over though “some steps” were still required to complete the process.
