House approves India nuclear bill

The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday approved legislation that is a major step toward allowing the sale of American-made nuclear reactors and fuel to India.

The measure passed on a vote of 330-59. The Senate was expected to give the bill final congressional approval in the next day or so, which would allow President George W. Bush to sign it into law.

Critics decried the bill as a historic mistake that undermines U.S. efforts to curb the spread of nuclear weapons, but supporters said it will cement ties with the rising South Asia power and open up billions of dollars in trade for U.S. companies.
