US Congress to vote today on India nuclear deal

Congress will vote on Friday on legislation that is a big step towards allowing nuclear-armed India to purchase US nuclear reactors and fuel for the first time in three decades, lawmakers and aides said on Thursday.

The vote was set after negotiators for the Senate and the House of Representatives agreed on a compromise bill that critics said would weaken protections against weapons proliferation but supporters said met the needs of the Bush administration and India.

Under strong pressure from New Delhi, negotiators softened a provision that would have required US presidents to certify India is actively cooperating in restraining Iran’s nuclear program.
