A high-level government panel has admitted seven more public sector firms, including Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and National Aluminium Company (Nalco), into the coveted Navratna club, taking its membership to 16.
While nine companies were in the fray, the Apex Committee headed by Cabinet Secretary B K Chaturvedi cleared seven names last week, official sources told PTI. Now, only the respective ministers have to sign the necessary documents, they said.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has ordered an additional 24 F404-GE-IN20 afterburning engines to power the first operational squadron of Tejas fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
Value of the order is in excess of $100 million and follows an initial 2004 purchase of 17 F404-GE-IN20 engines to power a limited series of operational production aircraft and naval prototypes.

Two bluechip defence public sector undertakings—Bangalore based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and radar giant Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)—are being given the coveted nav ratnas status.
This was announced here today by K P Singh, secretary defence production, who said that the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had already cleared the proposal.

The stage is set for at least one more Indo-Russian joint venture involving Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd since the Sukhoi deal. Now on the anvil is a 50:50 tie-up among HAL and two Russian companies for the multi-role transport aircraft or MRTA for both their needs, according to the top officials of HAL and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation.
A team from HAL and the Department of Defence Production will visit Russia shortly to sort out a few minor issues related to third country exports, according to the DoDP Secretary, Mr K.P.Singh. He told a briefing here that a draft DPT (detailed project report) has been prepared on role sharing.

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) said on Tuesday it has ordered 24 afterburning engines from GE Aviation in a deal valued at more than $100 million.
The order of F404-GE-IN20 engines, for the Indian Air Force’s first operational squadron of Tejas fighter aircraft, follows an earlier purchase of 17 engines in 2004, HAL said.
GE Aviation, a manufacturer of jet engines for civil and military aircraft, is a unit of General Electric Co.

India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is poised for weaponisation in April, said Dr. PS Subramanyam, Director of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Programme Director for LCA.
The world’s lightest fighter aircraft with state-of-the-art technology would give an impetus to the Indian Air Force in replacing ageing MIGs.

A full-scale mock-up of a new attack helicopter will be the highlight of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited – display at the Aero India show here next week, even as India’s premier aircraft maker looks to cementing new partnerships with key aviation giants during the five-day show.
Loosely based on the hugely successful Eurocopter, the model of the light combat helicopter – will be loaded with a 20-mm gun, a 70-mm rocket and an electro-optical pod.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has approached FIPB for setting up a joint venture company with US-based Edgewood Ventures for development and manufacture of high-technology miniature modules for aerospace applications.
In the proposed joint venture company, Edgewood Ventures sought to have 26 per cent stake and HAL the remaining 74 per cent, sources told PTI.
The proposed JV is also seeking to have collaboration with 3D Plus, France for setting up an R&D centre, besides developing new technologies. For this also HAL has approached Foreign Investment Promotion Board.
